Aim:
This qualification is designed to provide you with the knowledge to ensure safe and effective exercise programming for clients with a number of medical conditions and common reasons for referral onto a community-based exercise referral scheme.
Objectives:
To enable candidates to design and agree a safe and effective programme for clients with a range of common referral conditions.
To enable candidates to deliver, review and adapt a programme for clients with a range of common referral conditions
You will complete 3 units:
Unit 1 – Principles of Physical Activity and Exercise Referral
Unit 2 – Medical Conditions, Treatment and Safe and Effective Exercise Programming
Unit 3 – Professional Practice and Processes in Exercise Referral
You must be REPS 3 qualified in Personal Training or equivalent before taking this course.
Active IQ Level 3 Certificate in Exercise Referral £295
Exercise Referral leading to the Active IQ Level 3 Certificate in Exercise Referral. A vocationally related qualification (VRQ), at Level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework.
This qualification allows access onto the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at Level 3.
Who is this course suitable for?
Instructors who wish to design and implement programmes of exercise for GP referred clients.
What are the entry requirements?
Candidates must hold a Level 3 Certificate in Advanced Fitness Instructing Gym, Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training or equivalent.
What will you learn?
Comprehensive evidence based guidelines for the safe and effective exercise prescription for 14 different common referral conditions including: development of CHD, hypertension, peripheral arterial disease, arthritis, obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, back pain, joint replacement, asthma and chronic lung disease, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and common mental health problems.
Clinically led guidance regarding the pathology, causes, risk factors and the monitoring and deterioration of the different medical conditions and reasons for referring back to the healthcare professional.
Pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of the different conditions including side effects relevant to exercise participation.
Cardiac Rehabilitation
This syllabus does not qualify students to prescribe an exercise programme for a client entering Phase IV Cardiac Rehabilitation. Students need to obtain a recognised Cardiac Rehab Phase IV qualification to work with this particular group of clients.

Course structure
The course consists of one teaching day, webinars, assignments and assessments which combine worksheets, a case study and a theory paper. You will be informed during your course when the recommended times for handing in assignments are and the theory assessment date, but generally you can work at your own pace.

Progress to NVQ Level 3 Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise, or Level 4 Certificate in Exercise for the Management of Lower Back Pain
