One-Day Emergency First Aid at Work Course

This new HSE approved qualification comes into effect as from 1st October 2009, along with new guidance on assessing the needs of First Aid in your workplace. Your risk assessment of First Aid needs may well identify the need for Emergency First Aiders either as an addition to your First Aiders, or where the risk of your business is low; it may well identify them as being sufficient without the need of additional First Aiders.
It is critical that you familiarise yourself with the new assessment table of First Aid needs before making your decision. You can obtain a copy of this table from your training provider.

Duration

A minimum of 6 hours consisting of theoretical and practical activities.

Syllabus

A range of subjects is covered including:

Responsibilities and reporting, Resuscitation, Angina, Assessment of the situation, Heart attacks, Choking, Basic hygiene in First Aid, Bleeding control, Shock, Dealing with an unresponsive casualty, Minor injuries, Seizures

Certification

Assessment is ongoing by the instructor, and a 3-year qualification will be issued to those who meet the criteria. In addition, the HSE strongly recommend that all students undergo an annual refresher programme of about 3 hours, although it is not mandatory.

Numbers

A maximum of 12 students are allowed and must be aged a minimum of 16 years or above. Bigger groups can be catered for, but the ratio must not exceed 12 students per instructor.

Location

We are able to deliver this course on your site, reducing your costs in respect of additional time out and travelling. If you only have a small number that need training, then we can arrange a date in a choice of our venues in the East Central London area.

Responsibilities of the Emergency First Aider

Module content: Responsibilities of the Emergency First Aider, Contacting the emergency services, Priorities of First Aid treatment, Communication with casualty/casualties.

Module 5

Action in an Emergency

Module content: Factors involved in an emergency, Assessing the scene (dangers,) Safety approach.

Module 6

Primary Survey

Module content: Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing

Module 7

Secondary Assessment

Module content: Casualty assessment, Top-to-toe survey, Recovery position – how and why.

Module 8

Breathing and Circulation

Module 9

Principles of Resuscitation

Module content: Principles of resuscitation (EAV), Principles of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Current ERC Guidelines, Alternative types of expired air ventilation, Use of face shields & masks, Chain of survival.

Module 10

Disorders of Respiration

Module content: Choking - conscious adult Choking - unconscious adult.

Module 11

Disorders of the Circulation

Module content: How the circulatory system works, How to recognize signs of circulation, The definition, causes, recognition and treatment of the following disorders • Shock • Heart attack • Cardiac arrest

Module 12

Wounds and Bleeding

Module content: Types of wound, Types of bleeding, Preventing cross-infection, General rules for bandaging, Treatment of minor & major external bleeding, Internal bleeding recognition and treatment, Foreign bodies in wounds.
